On a recent snorkel outing, Don and I took our new underwater housing for the video camera out for a test drive. The conditions were not the best for shooting, but we were rewarded with a little gift anyway. One of Maui's green sea turtles took shape in the murky water and lumbered slowly below us, nonchalant and nonplussed by our presence. If you look closely, you can see a flash of light as a fish discovers the algae snack on the turtle's back. All too soon, the two in tandem fade back into the murk.

Maalaea Sunset

Nineteen years on Maui, and I still get excited over our amazing sunsets. This photo was taken in 2006 when we lived on the slopes of Haleakala Crater, about 3000 feet above the ocean (cold!). We rarely have boring sunsets, maybe during a passing storm. And as if to make up for a gray one the evening before, Mother Nature puts on a show as the clouds move on.

In this photo, Maalaea Harbor cuts into Maui at the base of the West Maui Mountains. In the background, a cloud-topped Lanai creates a ghostly mirror image of its sister island.

Up here, an awareness creeps in that we are a very small piece of terra firma in the vast Pacific - a mere speck on the globe if you can find us at all. Thousands of miles of water on all sides. It makes me want to put on my life preserver - just in case...
